Will it Make a Difference if I Buy a .info Domain Instead of a .com?

I’ve heard both sides of this debate from various marketers over the years, but predominately the answer most will give to that question is yes, it does matter. That for some reason, Google gives more “love” to a .com or possibly a .org domain than to a .info (or even .net) domain.

The people that have told me this say that it is obvious to see this is true because when you look at the search results you get when you enter a search phrase into the search engines, the top sites are quite often going to be .com or .org.

Yes, this is usually accurate, but I have another side to that statement that you could consider when deciding which extension you should purchase.

There are many, many, many more .com and .org sites on the Internet than there are .info. This statement on it’s own would explain why the search results generally have .com and .org domains in their page one listings. This does not mean that it is not a possibility that the search engines prefer .com or .org, I am simply bringing up a point. That is that .com and .org domains should be on page one of the search results most of the time, there are 10′s, even 100′s of thousands more websites with a .com or .org domain extension.

I have mostly .com websites. I like those because when people enter websites into their address bar they tend to enter .com. So, by just purchasing a .com you can ensure they arrive at your site. If the website you chose in a .com has a .info available and you buy it, then when the person goes to enter it into their address bar, chances are that unless they were really paying attention, they will be typing in .com. Therefore, rather than arriving at your website, they would go to someone else’s.

I do have a few .info domains however and as far as a SEO stand point I have discovered that they rank in the search engines equally as well as a .com website. So, for SEO purposes it does not seem to matter which extension you purchase. The SEO techniques side relies more on your keyword phrases and in-bound links than to the domain extension you buy.

Therefore, it comes down to what you prefer. Does it matter to you whetherthey accidentally enter .com rather than .info (or even .net)? Your answer to this question will aid you in choosing which domain name extension you purchase.
