Removal of Asbestos Safely

Filed under: Uncategorized — george @ 7:23 am

Introduction

In recent years there has been a dramatic increase in the health and safety agenda of handling asbestos, its management and disposal in a safe and secure manner. Where workers have been exposed to asbestos in confined spaces or where fibres have been present, such as during manufacture of items with asbestos as a key component, they are faced with serious health issues. It is now widely recognised that the greatest single work related cause of death is asbestos. For this reason alone health and safety information high lights the dangers of incorrect management of asbestos contaminated products, and the need for safe management and disposal is very high profile.

What is asbestos?

There are generally three forms of asbestos known as brown, blue and more common white asbestos. Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibre and is mined in various countries such as Canada and South Africa but, by far the largest producer is Russia. Although a dangerous substance to be managed, it is still valuable because of its unique resistance qualities, such as being resistant to heat, electricity and noise. It is essential for employement as a key component for items such as brake linings and insulation as well as for industrial use or in building construction.

Asbestos became widely used during the late 19th Century in the programme of building hospitals, factories, schools and farm houses which were all built using materials that contained asbestos. Its qualities of being resistant to heat, flame retardant and a good insulator meant that it was widely recognised as very good construction material in ceilings and walls. It was also widely used as a lagging material to wrap around steam pipes and boilers. Some household products such as early electric ovens also contained asbestos material, due to its excellent heat resistant qualities. Indeed I seem to recall the use of it in a very early electric oven at my grandparent’s house in the mid-late 1960’s. Just think of all those Shepherd Pies she used to make.

Nowadays if asbestos is found to be still present within a building, it is likely to cause alarm amongst those residents living in the building. People living close by are also likely to be concerned and very quickly an entire local community may find themselves alarmed about the dangers of having asbestos close by.

However, as long as the asbestos is well maintained and is not releasing fibres, into the atmosphere there is no danger to health. Asbestos only becomes dangerous and a health hazard when it’s disturbance takes place or if you breathe in asbestos dust, from the surrounding environment. Asbestos is toxic when particlesare breathed in because they lodge in the lungs causing breathing difficulties. The various forms of lung disease are very serious such as bronchiactisis, silicosis, and lung cancer. From the mid-1980’s, countries within the European Union and some of the world’s other most developed countries have banned asbestos due to its high risk health concerns.

A simple task such as laying roof insulation, should always be undertaken whilst wearing a protective face mask to avoid inhalation of asbestos dust and particles.

Why is Asbestos Dangerous?

The breathing in of asbestos dust is the cause of debilitating diseases. So, if you work in an environment where many thousands of asbestos-related particles exist in the air, unless you wear the appropriate face mask protection, you are putting your health in danger.

Of course, many years ago the dangers were unrecognised and whilst asbestos related illness may not affect you immediately, in later life the effects will become more apparent. Currently asbestos is responsible for approximately 4000 deaths per year and every week it contributes to the deaths of almost 40 tradesmen, including plumbers, electricians, carpenters and joiners. These trades are particularly at risk because the tradesmen will have worked in environments where asbestos will have been present. The replacing of plumbing work in factories, hospitals, schools, houses and factories will have been a common requirement in recent years. Equally, electricians, carpenters and joiners will have been exposed to similar work in their professional fields.

My father was an electrician before retiring ten years ago and over a thirty year period, rewired many factory premises, most likely working in asbestos contaminated areas
I used to work for a compressed air equipment manufacturer. The company’s main manufacturing site also included the offices, the manufacturing and assembly plant, the foundry and workshops. The whole site was built in the early 1900s and inevitably had used asbestos products within its construction. In the 1990s with much of the manufacturing moved overseas, it was decided to sell the site for redevelopment and the site has now been entirely demolished, ready for reconstruction. But just think how much of the construction material would have contained asbestos.

Before major demolition works could begin, a full site survey including an asbestos survey would have been required to identify and assess how to manage the removal of the asbestos material across the site. Each specific area would have required the advice of an approved asbestos management contractor and assurances of how the asbestos materials would be safely removed and disposed of. Due to the size of the site, this would have been a major task and also a costly one, but an essential requirement to ensure that all regulations relating to the management of asbestos material were adhered to.

Where is Asbestos Found?

If you visit an old building built around the 1950s, it is worth taking a look around to see where asbestos has been used and the types of materials which might contain asbestos. Asbestos cement products, such as large sheets of a corrugated material are likely to be asbestos cement sheets. It is distinguishable as a hard grey coloured material in which asbestos has been mixed with cement. It is likely that if the sheets have been used on the roof, that similar flat sheets will have been used for wall cladding. If a wall has been given a textured coating, then many old wall coating materials contained an asbestos mix to create the texture. On the floor, floor tiles made from asbestos may also be in place. Recognised for its fire retardant qualities, an asbestos spray may also have been used to coat wooden roof beams. Asbestos sprayed on walls and ceilings will have a high content of asbestos and is known to be easily disturbed just by movement and will give off dust. Then there will be asbestos used as a lagging material on pipes and plumbing equipment.

Approved contractors must undertake a full asbestos survey before the start of building demolition or site clearance projects can be started.

Managing and Disposing of Asbestos

Since the banning of using asbestos took effect, the usual method by which asbestos is now disposed is through the use of landfill sites. There are however very strict guidelines on how asbestos should be managed and disposed of.

First you must decide how big a project the job is. If you have asbestos removal to undertake in the home then the best strategy is to employ a fully licensed asbestos removal specialist to remove the toxic waste safely. The basic requirements for protection, including the wearing of a dust mask and a disposable overall, are not suggested as the limit of safety precautions and you will be will be much safer trusting this work to a specialist contractor. If you are removing sheets of asbestos for example from an old garage or shed, simply breaking one sheet up will release potentially harmful asbestos dust and fibres.

As long as there are no electrical cables and connections nearby, the asbestos removal specialist may treat the asbestos to be handled with water spray before commencing the removal of the material. However this kind of thing is not for the novice DIY enthusiast and should be left to an experienced specialist contractor at all times. The removed asbestos cannot simply be placed in your domestic waste for collection, it must be treated separately and either bagged or placed in a dedicated skip for safe disposal by specialists.

When the call for asbestos removal is much larger than the domestic project, the work should always be undertaken by a approved commercial asbestos removal company.

These companies have qualified in the relevant training and certification and will have the correct equipment to manage the task effectively, safely and in accordance with the correct regulations. Older buildings may require a dismantling process to carefully remove any asbestos and this work is likely to involve the use of scaffolding or cranes to be able to undertake this work safely. The most important point to remember is that as the customer, asbestos is on your premises. You are responsible for the removal, handling and safe disposal of the asbestos and to do so without employing an approved contractor could leave you open to prosecution.

To ensure that dedicated skips are used in the disposal of asbestos some waste management contractors operate colour coded skips so that only these are used for asbestos disposal. I know of one leading UK waste management company who have a two tone yellow and red painted skips used solely for the safe transportation and disposal of asbestos. As asbestos is classed as a hazardous waste material, only landfill sites licensed to take asbestos are permitted to accept asbestos onto the site.

I recall a large automotive company going into administration and thousands of brake lining pads had to be removed as part of a major site clearance project. Although they were all boxed, the fact that asbestos had been used in their manufacture meant that a specialist contractor was brought in to manage the removal and disposal of the stock. In today’s environment where recycling is a buzz word, it is very difficult and costly to recycle asbestos.

In the current economic climate companies should compare the costs involved of dismantling then renovating a premises rather than a complete relocation.

Health and Safety Issues when Working with Asbestos

Before commencing any work, if it is thought that asbestos may be present, the demolition company must undertake a complete project plan. No worker should be placed at risk, in an environment where asbestos is possibily located. Through a complete site survey, it must be established if materials containing asbestos are present and the work must be planned to either avoid disturbance or the need to dismantle and remove these materials.

If asbestos materials are to be removed, it is essential that the work should be undertaken by an licensed asbestos contractor, who has completed the appropriate asbestos awareness and training courses and is certificated. It is also important to note, whether the premises will need to be vacated whilst the work is to be undertaken. If people remain in or near the area where asbestos is to be removed, disturbance of the material will place anyone in the close vicinity of the project in danger. Other considerations and decisions may need to be taken into account, particularly where there is a need to work at height and to identify precisely which equipment is to be required to complete the task safely.

All major projects, should be supervised throughout and inspected at various stages to ensure that the work complies with regulations at the end of the task, and that it is safe for employees to re-occupy the premises.

Of course, throughout the project, the contract manager must ensure that arrangements have been made for the safe disposal of all the asbestos waste. For those undertaking the job, vigilance will be required throughout the project to protect their own health. Face masks will be worn, as well as appropriate clothing such as a disposable all in one overall. Clean up as you go is a strategy employed by asbestos removal specialists when they work through the project, to limit the amount of asbestos fibres spreading to other parts of the building.

Conclusion

The strict regulations which now surround the handling and management of asbestos will in nearly all cases require that any project involving the dismantling of asbestos materials is managed by a specialist asbestos removal contractor.

Without specialist knowledge, awareness and the correct equipment, any project involving asbestos removal brings potential health risks. Any company engaging a contractor who does not comply with the correct legislation, will be responsible themselves, not the contractor. So aside from the health concerns, it is in the interest of the owner of a property to comply with the rules and regulations which govern the management of asbestos projects.

Often referred to as the hidden killer, improved knowledge and awareness of the devastating long term effects that asbestos has upon one’s health is now well documented. It is hoped that in the coming years we will begin to see a decline in asbestos related diseases or illnesses ,as the exposure of those working in asbestos environments is more carefully managed. Unfortunately until the mid-1980s, for those who had worked in or around environments where asbestos was present, the worry of asbestos related death remains.

Whichever way you look at it, asbestos is a pretty unpleasant substance if inhaled and brings cause for concern if it is present in your premises, so seek the advice of a specialist asbestos removal contractor to ensure the effective and compliant management of your particular project.

A Guide To Buying Mountain Bikes

Filed under: Uncategorized — george @ 7:34 am

When choosing a mountain bike you must consider how you are going to use it, if all you want your new mountain bike for is going for a ride in the woods with the dog or a nice leisurely ride on the canal path you will not need a full suspension mountain bike with 10cm travel on the forks and an articulated rear end with rebound control and damping.

How to Begin.

If you do want to go for an easy ride in the park you do not need to spend a lot, if you think you will do any off-road riding then big tread tires maybe all you need, but if you think you might try some rough stuff then you will need suspension.

Gears will probably be Shimano, brakes must be V-brakes, but could be made by a few different manufacturers, all the rest of the MTB components will depend on how much you can spend. If you go to your local bike shop or big sports store and see what they’ve got to offer, then buy it or have look on the Internet and maybe you’ll,you will find the same thing at a cheaper price.

The Next Step Up.

So maybe you want to be a bit more adventurous, more off-road, more forest tracks and dry boulder river beds, then you’ll need something a little lighter, with suspension forks. All this will cost you more money, but will be worth it for the extra enjoyment and adventure. With a better mountain bike it will have a sportier handling and because it is lighter, it will be easier to struggle up the hills before you come flying down the other side. The components will again be Shimano and the quality will depend on how much money you can spend. V-brakes and Rapid-fire gear shifters, along with Shimano chain set, bottom bracket and headset. Handle bars, stem and seat pin should be alloy and along with a comfortable saddle you’ll be ready to take to the hills.

More Bike - More Money

The next rung up on the mountain bike ladder would be good enough to race on. There are many to choose from, get on the net and surf the bike manufacturers sites and all the shop sites along with the magazines for juicy photos of the bikes.

The top manufacturers in this price range, I would say are: - Specialized, Trek, Giant and Cannondale, these companies make the nicest frames with the best mountain bike parts available at the price, gears will be either Shimano or SRAM, brakes could be V-brakes or cable disc brakes, both are very good and light, most of the other MTB parts, of course will be Shimano and as usual get the best you can afford. There are many combinations of hubs and rims to make up your wheels; hubs from Shimano and rims form Mavic are the usual mix. Then you have to choose which suspension forks to put on you bike, you may not get a choice, depending on which bike you buy, the main ones are Marzocchi, RST, Manitou, Fox, RockShox and Suntour suspension forks buy any of these and you wont go far wrong.

Eliminate Snoring - Through Surgery

Filed under: Uncategorized — george @ 7:50 am

Chances are that no one wants to think about surgery, ever.No matter what your difficulty or how much you may trust and even like your doctor, the thought of needles and scalpels and the pain and bruising of any type of surgery is just not fun for anyone. On the other hand, there are some new surgeries accessible today that can absolutely eliminate snoring, and these procedures are typically done on an outpatient basis, meaning you can return to work the next day and experience minimal discomfort.  Let’s take a look at these options that will help stop snoring.

Removing the Soft Palate to Eliminate Snoring

Of course, in this type of surgery the doctor does not eliminate the soft palate completely, as the soft palate is simply the area in the back of your mouth not supported by your skull.  You can feel it with your tongue, if you slide it over the roof of your mouth. The motive that this surgery helps to do away with snoring is because some cases of snoring are caused by that soft palate vibrating when a person breathes through their mouth, and the tissue obstructs that airway.  If there is excessive tissue in the soft palate, cutting away just a layer or two can greatly help eliminate snoring.  This widens that passageway and enables air to pass through this area with less obstruction and therefore less vibrating.  It may not completely eliminate snoring, but it can reduce it.

Removing the Tonsils and Uvula

By removing the tonsils and uvula, or cutting away some of the tissue surrounding these, your doctor may be able to eliminate snoring the same way that cutting the soft palate does. The airway becomes larger and there is less barrier and therefore less vibration.

For both these types of surgeries, there may not be a need for actual scalpels as many are now being done with lasers.  This allows the doctor to make a more precise cut and take away less tissue than with a scalpel and can be a great option as snoring cures.

Building Scar Tissue

If the tissues and membranes in the throat are very flabby, they will vibrate more.A new procedure to help eliminate snoring is to cut or cauterize this area in order to build scar tissue, which makes the throat area stiffer and therefore less likely to vibrate.

Surgeries for the Nasal Cavities

Even those most causes of snoring involve the throat and mouth, you’re really not supposed to be breathing through your mouth in the first place, even when you sleep.  Sometimes this happens when there is an obstruction or problem with the nasal cavities, such as from collapsing sinuses due to aging.  Another common procedure to help eliminate snoring is to make small incisions along the sinus cavities to open them up, thus allowing a person to breathe much easier through the nose.

How to stop snoring is something only your doctor can determine if any of these procedures are right for you, and if you have any other options available to you in order to eliminate snoring in your case.

Disclaimer: Always consult your doctor before taking any medical advice.

With Bad Credit You May As Well Live on the Moon

Americans are dealing with the credit crunch by keeping cash on hand. In the process, however, the average consumer is paying 2.6 bills late every month, according to the Western Union Payment Services Money Mindset Index. The longer you maintain a track record of paying your bills on time, the better your credit score, according to the Fair Isaac Corporation, which created the FICO score, more commonly known as a credit score. If you want information about 3 credit score and how to boost your credit score get the Suze Orman FICO Kit. The best tip is that your bill payment history accounts for 35 percent of your credit score, which is used to determine your eligibility for mortgages, auto loans, credit cards and other financing.

Paydayloan critics don’t ever concern themselves with getting crisis cash by tomorrow to keep the lights on. Simply because somebody continues to be shut out from conventional finance options does not mean they cannot use credit responsibly. Before you hit the button for an ad that uses language like business start up loans take a moment. One of the keys to responsible poor credit online payday loan usage is to borrow as little as is absolutely necessary and to pay off the pay day loan on the original due date. When things relax start taking care of improving your credit standing. Lots of other people now have good credit ratings who never thought they could. Get your credit score to 700 and you can qualify for a low interest rate charge card you can use for last minute money.

Everybody needs to be concerned about their credit score and what they can do to help it higher. If phrases like credit score loan catch your eye you need to know this. Each and every point below 700, and more probably 750 in a tight money economy, will cost you extra cash in interest payments over the life of every loan you get. And that is if you can get a loan. Banks have money but they are afraid to lend it to anyone with less than the very highest credit ranking.

Pain Information And The Types Of Treatments That Are Available

Filed under: Uncategorized — george @ 7:18 am

What options are there when pain strikes. This depends on the severity of the pain, and where the pain is occurring. If the pain is a minor headache, toothache or a minor pain we all suffer from, then an ordinary analgesic will usually be enough. For toothache pain killers containing Ibuprofen is probably the right solution, toothache is sometimes accompanied by inflammation in the troubled area, Ibuprofen is an anti inflammatory and will therefore help to decrease the inflammation. If the pain persists you should get medical attention, as the pain could be the symptom of a more serious underlying problem. Pain is your body letting you know that something is amiss, don’t ignore the message if pain is persistant.

There are two types of pain, acute pain and chronic pain. Acute pain is usually a short term pain that recedes without further treatment, has no serious underlying problems associated with it and normally requires nothing more than over the counter analgesics. Chronic pain though is much more serious, chronic pain usually persists and is likely to be associated with an underlying condition or injury. It can often begin from something like a sprain or infection that persists and becomes more serious, or it can be caused by a developing disease or cancer. Chronic pain can persist for months, possibly even years. As well as a requirement to treat the main problem, pain killers that are stronger than over the counter pain killers is usually required. Among the most prescribed pain medications include tramadol, ultram and ultracet, with tramadol being the most common prescribed. These pain medications are not scheduled as controlled substances, therefore it is possible to order tramadol online. In many cases pain medication is prescribed with other treatments to treat the problem causing the pain.

Probably the commonest form of pain we experience is a headache. A headache may well disappear without recourse to any treatment, over the counter pain relief medication will usually be enough to lessen the pain. Migraine is a much more severe type of headache and can be caused by various underlying conditions. A migraine may be accompanied by several other conditions, such as mood changes, sensitivity to light, one sided headache and nausea. A migraine may only last for a few hours, but can continue for several days. Anyone suffering from a migraine should get medical attention.

For pain that is associated with muscles and joints, physiotherapy is often used, and in many cases can result in the complete removal of the underlying problem. Electrical stimulation is a technique used, often as a last resort. Electrical stimulation works by interrupting pain signals in the spinal cord. Acupuncture may also be used to try and lessen pain, fine needles are entered at key points on the skin, the needles disturb the flow of spasms through the body. Fine needles may be placed in areas far removed from the source of the pain.

The main point to consider, is that if pain becomes serious, especially if it persists, get medical advice without delay, it could be due to a more serious underlying problem.

Disclaimer: This post is based on information freely available in the popular media and medical journals related to pain relief. Nothing in this posting is intended to be or should be construed to be any sort of medical advice. For medical advice the reader should consult with his/her physician or other medical specialist.

Understanding The Art Of Beryl Cook

Filed under: Uncategorized — george @ 7:15 am

When it comes to the world of art, one of the pioneers to be taken note for is Beryl Cook. She has been one of the many institutions in the world of visual arts in the past because of her unique works of art that are worth describing or interpreting.

If you are not familiar with Beryl Cook, she is an English painter born in Surrey on September 10, 1926. She went to school for education but needed to stop at age 14 in order to work. She has worked a number of jobs which including the time when she became a showgirl in “The Gypsy Princess,” which is a touring production during those times. Aside from this, she has also taken part in fashion industry at a period of time. She married John, who was also her childhood friend who has been a member of the Merchant Navy. They started a pub as a business after John retired. However, they would need to transfer to Southern Rhodesia and went back to Plymouth in 1963 where she started to paint.

In Plymouth, one of Cook’s family’s sources of income was their boarding house open for holidaymakers during summer time. During their stay in the area, Beryl has been polishing her skills as an artist. Her primary inspirations during these times were the people around her. Beryl observed them and puts to her observations in the canvas. In 1975, she started to fill their boarding house with her paintings.

A friend noticed the paintings and bought around a dozen of them or more. This is the start when she sold was able to sold the paintings for approximately £10 per painting. Since then, she continued to paint and got the attention of Plymouth’s Arts Center’s Bernard Samuels. Her works were showcased in a number of exhibits and thus marking the start of her continuous popularity.

You will know if the art work is Beryl’s when you see a sort of comical characters or paintings of fat people. As mentioned above, her inspiration for her works are observing people through and their daily tasks. Hence, you will see images of people doing their daily routines or in other words the day in and day out in Plymouth.

Since many of her works were displayed on the exhibits, many people continued to recognize and appreciate her works. When she died, her works were compared with William Hogarth’s works without the dark feel in it.

But if you have not any original Beryl works, then you can take a look on a number Beryl Cook prints. These Beryl Cook prints are printed copies of her art works. Just use the description of her work above and you will identify that they are among her works. Because of she was critically acclaimed in the past, the Beryl Cook prints are also gaining popularity in the market and are also gaining profits for people who are entering the art print business using Beryl Cooks art work.
